Rowe Middle School is proud to announce our status as an AVID school! With over $250,000 in grants from Nike and The Miller Foundation, the North Clackamas School District is implementing AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) in each of its secondary schools this fall. AVID is a program designed to support and prepare students to be college ready. It includes an elective class and school-wide systems to support a college-going culture. Rowe has over 100 students who applied and interviewed for the AVID Elective Class. In addition, Rowe is implementing AVID's binder system for EACH of its students school wide. Teachers will also be using a variety of AVID strategies to support W-I-C-O-R (Writing to Learn, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading to Learn) in their classrooms. In the Spring of 2021, Rowe will be recruiting and interviewing 6th graders to join the AVID Elective Class for 2020-21 school year.

School-wide Binder Implementation

What is the purpose of the AVID binder?

Organization is an important skill in school, career and other aspects of daily life. The AVID binder is an organizational tool to help students maintain notes and school work in one place. Students are expected to maintain a binder, which has been provided to them along with all of the necessary items needed. They are expected to keep it organized using the AVID methods they have been taught. Students will be evaluated on organization, and whether they have all of their materials for every class in their binder. The binder will be evaluated weekly.

Students should spend no more than 30 minutes each day organizing and completing their notes. It should be a red flag to parents if their student spends two or more hours the night before a binder check trying to put it together.

What should be in the AVID Binder?

Binders must be good quality 3-inch three-ring binder with pocket inserts.
